Olympian Chris Newton was a guest of honour at a recent event in Preston when Lord Sebastian Coe visited as part of the 2012 regional planning. The region is very keen to attract competitors from other countries across the world to use the North West as training venues in preparation for the London games.
As part of the day Chris shared his experiences from Beijing with young members of the Gallica swimming club from Preston. It was quite amazing to see Chris swamped by the eager youngsters and the look of awe on their faces when he showed them all his medal.
Of course being a cyclist Chris was keen to see the developments being made in the region in his chosen sport. The visit to the superb facilities at the Preston Sports Arena included the a display by the recently appointed GO Ride coaches who were there with a group of local schoolchildren. Chris posed with the kids in their new T shirts and again was rewarded with remarkably interested young people. It’s good to see how sport can inspire youngsters. Also inspired was Chairman of Lancashire County Council Alan Whittaker who was keen to see Chris’ medal whilst Chris had a good look at the chain of office for Lancashire.
Over the past 5 years Chris has raced in the successful pro-racing team which has been sponsored by Recycling Lives, we wish him every success in the future and of course congratulate him on his third Olympic medal.
